The death toll in the New Zealand mosque massacres rose to 50 Saturday when police discovered another body buried beneath the carnage in Christchurch.
“As of last night we were able to take all of the victims from both of those scenes and in doing so we have further located another victim,” New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said in a press conference.
Bush said authorities found the body at the Al Noor mosque, where 42 died when white supremacist gunman Brenton Tarrant allegedly stormed the facility armed with two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.
Seven people died at the second mosque Tarrant targeted after terrorizing Al Noor, authorities said. One person later died at the hospital.
Thirty-six people, including a child, were hospitalized among the 50 injured, Bush said. Two are in critical condition.
Tarrant was charged with one count of murder Saturday. Officials said more charges are forthcoming. He’s due back in court April 5.
Three additional suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting, with one released. The other two now face charges “tangential” to the attack, Bush said.
Daniel John Burrough, 18 of Christchurch, was charged with “intent to excite hostility or ill-will.” The other unidentified suspect was charged with a firearms offense.
