The monitoring agency said the 6.2 magnitude quake struck 83 miles northwest of the city of Kupang on Timor island. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage to property.A spokesman for Indonesia’s Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council said no Tsunami warnings had been issued.
Indonesia is located within the infamous Ring of Fire region.
The Ring of Fire is a massive horseshoe-shaped ring encircling the Pacific basin made up of a string of volcanoes and seismic activity.
About 90 percent of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, which is dotted with 75 percent of all the active volcanoes on earth.
In total, the ring forms a 25,000-mile arc from the boundary of the Pacific Plate, to the Cocos and Nazca Plates that line the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
The United States Geographical Survey (USGS) later reported a 6.0 magnitude earthquake followed by milder aftershocks near L’Esperance Rock in the Pacific Ocean north of New Zealand.
It said the tremors were out at sea and were not expected to cause loss of life of or damage to property.
