Celebrated singer Shahnaz Rahmatullah has died of a heart attack at her Baridhara residence in the capital city around 12am Sunday (March 24). She was 67.
Singer-songwriter-music director Shafiq Tuhin confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
“She had no cardiac problems in the past. She suffered the cardiac arrest all of a sudden at the night,” he said.
Singer Tapon Chowdhury, Lyricist Kabir Bokul and Shafiq Tuhin went to the singer’s residence immediately after knowing the sad news.
She will be buried at Banani Military Graveyard following a Namaz-e-Janaza at a Baridhara mosque after Johr prayer, Tuhin added.
Born in January 2, 1952, Shahnaz Rahmatullah rose to fame with her melodious voice and unique singing style.
Three songs of her were placed among BBC Top 20 Bangla Songs of All Time.
‘Ek Nodi Rokto Periye’, ‘Ekbar Jete De Na Amar Chotto Sonar Gaaye’, ‘Ektara Tui Desher Katha’, ‘Aamay Jodi Proshno Kore’ and ‘Je Chhilo Dristir Simanay’ are a few of her great hits.
She was awarded with Ekushey Padak in 1992 and National Film Awards (best female singer) in 1990.
