The Council of Chamber Presidents has thrown its support behind Sheikh Fazle Fahim for the presidency of FBCCI ahead of the elections to the apex trade body.
The decision taken by the council on Tuesday has all but sealed Fazle Fahim becoming the next president of FBCCI as the post will go to the Chamber Group this year following rules.
The council took the decision in a meeting at the FBCCI Bhaban in Dhaka, according to a media release from the federation’s Acting Secretary General Hussain Jamil.
Son of Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP, Fazle Fahim is currently serving the FBCCI as its senior vice-president.
The managing director of Obsidian Bangladesh Limited, Fazle Fahim heads the Gopalganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Council of Chamber Presidents as well.
The leaders of the district, division, metropolitan and women’s chambers “beyond all divides expressed their support for Sheikh Fazle Fahim considering his visionary, prudent and responsible role in the past”, according to the release from Jamil.
The president and vice-president will be elected from the Chamber Group while the post of senior vice-chairman will go to the Association Group this time in line with the organisation’s charter.
In the last FBCCI elections in May 2017, Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin of the Association Group was elected president.
He was also present in Tuesday’s meeting, chaired by Fazle Fahim, as chief guest.
The members of the federation are scheduled to cast their votes to elect the new leadership for 2019-21 term on Apr 27.
