Congress President Rahul Gandhi addressed the media on Thursday to congratulate Narendra Modi for BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
He also conceded defeat in Amethi, where he was contesting against BJP’s Smriti Irani.
“I had said that during the campaign ‘janta maalik hai’ and today people have clearly given their decision. I congratulate the PM and BJP,” he said.
When asked as to why he thinks his party lost, he said, “Frankly, today is the not the day to discuss what I think went wrong because people of India have clearly decided that Narendra Modi is going to be their Prime Minister and as an Indian I respect that.”
He also added that there are many people in the country who believe in the Congress’s ideology and the party workers should not feel disheartened about the loss.
The contest in Amethi was a close one, but Smriti Irani has now taken the lead, garnering 2,65,792 votes of the total votes polled. Rahul has got 2,63,102 votes so far.
“I hope that Smriti Irani takes care of Amethi with lots of love, that she honours the confidence that Amethi have placed in her,” he said.
Rahul, meanwhile, can take heart from the fact that he is leading in Wayanad with a margin of around 4 lakh votes.
